Character Education
"The child [is] always to be approached as a spiritual idea, capable of perceiving and loving all good ideas." from Foundation Stones, (p. 46) by Sarah Pyle Smart, founder of the Daycroft School.
The Daycroft Online Learning Community provides several opportunities for students to investigate and discuss qualities that contribute to strong character and to develop critical thinking and moral reasoning skills.
- Character podcasts (grades K-5)
- Middle School Current Events seminar that brings students together online to discuss topics of current interest from the Christian Science Monitor. The seminar includes discussions of character qualities -- such as honesty and integrity -- and also helps students to learn to discern between fact and opinion.
- High School seminars that focus on critical thinking, ethical reasoning and leadership through the study of articles from the Christian Science Monitor and other sources.
These lessons encourage students and families to study together—and then express in practical ways—the moral and spiritual qualities essential to individual growth and responsible citizenship.
After working with the lesson on honesty, one of our young students wrote:
“Honesty is not just telling the truth, but also doing what is right.”
He shared a story from the newspaper about someone who found a lost checkbook at WalMart and turned it in. He also drew a picture of the story.
